AESTHETIC POWER OF JUDGEMENT. Michael Fleischhacker and Franz Schuh in dialogue.
The claim made by works of art (which are labelled as such) is that they speak for themselves.
However, talking about works of art, i.e. making judgements about them, is part of "culture", which can be understood sarcastically as providing topics of conversation. The privilege of language is expressed in "aesthetics" as a discipline of thought: nobody has to be able to paint, but those who cannot speak are isolated as if in punishment.
"Aesthetics" can be understood as the study of art, and if one "assumes" that art is something that is - justifiably - called that, the question of aesthetic judgement becomes important. Thanks to Immanuel Kant's philosophy of art, it is impossible to imagine aesthetics without the word "power of judgement". This applies above all to Kant's definition of the judgement of art, which results from an indefinable combination of feeling and understanding. We will also discuss how the art of Hermann Nitsch can be "judged" from such a perspective.
